The Handoff™Legal documents for families of students turning 18

They're leaving home. Make sure you're still there when it matters.

Once your child turns 18, doctors, schools, and banks generally stop sharing information with parents, even in an emergency. The Handoff™ prepares the health care, school, and financial documents your young adult signs to keep you connected, plus an emergency card for their wallet. You answer about 15 minutes of guided questions online, together, and we take it from there.

About 15 minutes, together at home.

My son runs track, and this fall he left home for a university in another state. As an attorney, I knew the law would change when he turned 18. What surprised me was how quickly it reached our everyday life. Our family doctor, who had cared for him for years, could no longer talk with me about scheduling his physical, turning in his sports forms, or sending his vaccine records. My role on his bank accounts and the custodial accounts I had managed for him ended almost overnight.

He still needed me. I just needed his permission. Every relay is won or lost in the handoff, and parenting is no different. TrackMom™ helps parents, guardians, or other trusted adults put that permission in place before it's needed, so when your student takes the baton, you're still there when it matters.

You don't have to be a track mom, or a mom at all, to be part of TrackMom™. Every parent runs a relay. At 18, it's time for the handoff.

What changes at 18

Three places where parents get left out, and how to stay connected.

1

Health

Without permission, doctors and hospitals may not share information with you, or permit you to decide your student's medical care in an emergency. A HIPAA Authorization lets them share information with you, and a Medical Durable Power of Attorney names who can make decisions if your student can't.

2

School

Schools are required by law to keep student records private, even from parents paying tuition. A FERPA waiver lets the school share grades and other important educational records with you.

3

Money

Access to bank accounts and other financial records is restricted to the account owner, who may be solely your student once they turn 18. That means you're locked out. A Financial Power of Attorney names the person who can step in and help with paying fees, managing investment accounts, and more.

I'm an attorney, and I was still caught off guard when my son's own doctor couldn't send me his vaccine records after he turned 18. If a routine form can stop a mother at the front desk, imagine an emergency room in the middle of the night. Don't wait until you need these documents to find out you don't have them. Love alone cannot unlock a hospital door.

The emergency card

When you can't be there, their wallet speaks for them.

Signed documents only help if someone can find them. Most end up in a drawer at home, which won't help if your student is rushed to an emergency room in another state. That's why The Handoff™ includes enrollment in DocuBank at our discounted rate. DocuBank stores your student's medical documents securely and issues an emergency card for their wallet.

If your student can't speak for themselves, the card tells the hospital who to call and how to reach their documents right away.

The card works only after your student signs and enrolls, so don't wait.

  • Shows your student's college or university, emergency contacts, and allergies
  • Tells a hospital how to reach their HIPAA Authorization and Medical Durable Power of Attorney
  • Your documents are stored securely with DocuBank
  • $18 for the first year at our discounted rate, paid directly to DocuBank

Illustration only. Actual wallet cards are issued by DocuBank.

When to do this

The best time is the day they turn 18.

The moment your student turns 18, the access you've always had ends, and an emergency can happen at any time. With documents in place, you can step in quickly, without delays or going to court. Have everything ready before the birthday, so your student can sign as soon as they turn 18.

Love alone will not unlock a hospital room. The right documents will. If your student is already 18, today is the day.

Not 18 yet?

Start now. You'll have everything ready, with instructions for signing on their 18th birthday.

Before you buy

A quick check that The Handoff™ is right for your family

Do you live in Michigan?

The Handoff™ is for Michigan families. If your student will live outside Michigan at least part of the time, we include a second set of medical documents for that state at no additional fee.

Does your student have a special situation?

If your student is an athlete with name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities, will study abroad, or has a disability, special needs, or an ongoing health condition, the attorney-prepared package from The Mack Law Group, a separate law firm, may be a better fit.

Joining the military or a service academy?

Once on active duty, service members can usually get these documents free through their branch's legal assistance office. You may wish to check with your recruiter or the academy before you buy. Our Handoff™ legal documents can still protect your student if you choose not to go that route, or in the months before they report for duty.

Questions

What parents ask us

My student isn't 18 yet. Can we still do this?

Yes. You'll still receive all of your student's documents when you finish. Because your student must be at least 18 to sign them, we'll include instructions on when and how to sign once your student turns 18.

Who signs the documents?

Your student does. Some documents need witnesses or a notary, and the signing guide walks you through each one step by step.

My student will live outside Michigan. Will this still help?

Yes. If your student will live in another state at least part of the time, for school, work, or service, we include a second set of medical documents for that state at no additional fee. If your student will study abroad, consider the attorney-prepared package.

How long does it take?

The questions take about 15 minutes, and your documents arrive by email within a few hours, or within 24 hours if your student will live outside Michigan.

How does DocuBank work?

DocuBank is a separate service that stores your student's documents and provides wallet cards with emergency contacts and access to their medical documents. Our families enroll at a discounted $18 for the first year, paid directly to DocuBank.

My student has a bank account or car in their own name. What happens to it?

Assets owned solely by your student may have to go through probate if something happens to them. Your package includes tips, such as naming beneficiaries on accounts, that may help those assets pass without probate.

Can I get a refund?

All sales are final. That's why we ask a few questions before you buy, so you can be sure The Handoff™ is the right fit.

Is this legal advice?

No. The Handoff™ is a self-help document service. TrackMom™ does not provide legal advice, and using this service does not create an attorney-client relationship.
